America

Here’s today’s picture:

One of my goals from the moment I purchased my camera was to be able to tell a story with a single picture. I think that this picture does a good job of that - but it’s hard for me to be sure. I know what I was trying to capture when I took the picture and when I cropped it but I would like to know what everyone else thinks. Yes, this is the first time I’m officially soliciting comments. What story does this picture tell you?

Aperture 25.0
Focal Length 31.0mm

As always, if you want a higher quality version, then email me at stackman@gmail.com.

Edit: I’ve cropped a different version of the above image.  I think I like the new version a little better.  Here it is.

  1. This picture reminds me of Iwo Jima :)

I think your photo is trying to tell us, that the war is not over.
From another point of view, I could say that america contributes to the green house effect :)

Also, in the middle of the photo there is a shape that looks like a person, as if a shell has exploded and this poor soul is trying to tell us something amidst the chaos of destruction.

  2. Well glad to see you are using your new camera Tom. America, a shadow of it’s former ideals, just dust blowing in the wind reminding us of the destiny that waits for all great empires…and all that poetic stuff that sounds much better when it’s not translated into words. Bust since you want to make sure, there ya go. I go animate now.

  3. ooo ooo, you could also go into the repetition with the flags and the poles being a comment on mass production and consumerism and all that goes with those….wheee!!!! amazing!

  5. I was also hoping that the figure and the flag being at half mast would drive home the notion of mourning - the loss of our ideals as a nation, the loss of lives in our war (with the “smoke” - it’s really steam but whatever - suggesting the violence as well as the burning of fuel) the loss of our friendship and stature in the world, etc. I liked the flags suggesting continuation more then mass production and consumerism. There’s no real end or beginning to it all.

  6. Hmm, the new version looks better. Now you can add a religious meaning to the photo. A holy war by America against evil. Long live the Fatherland.
